RE: [Marxism] 1983 open letter from SA to the SWP

The preliminary and more important question is why the three parts of the
opposition couldn't stay together. Had we done so, a principled way to approach
Solidarity may have been developed. And had that been done the combined forces
of what split into SA/BIDOM/Socialist Unity may have been big and clear enough
to turn Solidarity away from its centrist character.

Maybe not. But in any case US Trotskyism would have a more coherent expression
-- a task still deserving to be pursued.

My short answer to my above question is that having suffered through a
caricature of discipline under Barnes we had forgotten how to impose a sensible
Leninist discipline on ourselves, so each of the three wings thought their
tactical desires were more important than unity.

I am at a loss, though, to understand why all of the Socialist Action
people did not participate in the formation of Solidarity, which I
viewed and view as the best option available on the Left.

Best,
