Re: [Marxism] Commentary: Thatcher And His Ilk Should Stay Away From Africa

(It's distasteful for me to do this, but let me answer one source of
exhausted-nationalist diatribe - the Zim Herald - with another, the ANC
Youth League.)

Even a small and exposed country like Equatorial
Guinea is still able to resist such freebooters.
And in any case, as Sir Mark found out in a Cape Town
court and his team found out in Harare, Africa does
now stand united against such dreadful people as
himself.

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE REACTION TO MARK THATCHER PLEA BARGAIN
(ancpr-admin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

13 January 2005

The ANC Youth League is shocked and disturbed by the plea bargain entered
into by the state with Mark Thatcher. It is indeed a sad day in the life of
the country's judiciary and prosecution authority that a man who has
admitted that he played a significant role in bankrolling the failed coup d'
etat in Equitorial Guinea would get away with nothing more than a slap in
the wrist. This is indeed an abomination and a miscarriage of justice.

It is the Youth League's view that aiding and enabling criminal activities
like the overthrow of legitimate governments is not only a crime against the
people, but one which should be classified as unpardonable.

Our efforts to build a continent free of coups and at peace with itself will
never succeed if the likes of Mark Thatcher are allowed to walk free and not
face the full might of the law.

The decision of the scorpions to enter into a plea bargain with Mark
Thatcher brings to question the integrity of this institution and the extent
of their commitment to the creation of a criminal justice system that fights
an effective battle against crime. Mark Thatcher should have stood trial
and all facts in his case be tested by a competent court of law.

It was only yesterday when the same scorpions entered into a plea bargain
with Tony Yengeni, who in turn was sentenced to four years imprisonment for
fraud while Mark Thatcher gets away with a four-year suspended sentence and
a R3 million fine for bankrolling a coup attempt. Surely, any
right-thinking South African will realise something is very wrong with this
picture.
