[Marxism] "political pantomimes, imperialist melodramas" - Theatre Research Position

Royal Holloway

University of London

Post-doctoral Research Assistant

Royal Holloway, University of London, in collaboration with the British
Library, is seeking a postdoctoral research assistant from April 2005 until 31
January 2008, to work on the AHRB-funded project 'Buried Treasure:
rediscovering the Lord Chamberlain's Collection of Plays.' Mid-Victorians
agreed with G.H. Lewes that 'drama is extinct as literature.' But during the
span of the project, 1852-1866, over 3000 plays were licensed for performance.
These undervalued manuscripts were stored for many years in dark and
inaccessible cupboards and cellars until transferred to the British Library in
1973, and although they are now stored in optimum conditions, it has so far
been difficult to open them up to new critical perspectives or to re-evaluation
as performances rather literary achievements. We propose to uncover and
publicise a first slice of the hidden wealth of these political pantomimes,
imperialist melodramas, versions of Uncle Tom's Cabin, farces about feminism,
and who knows what more.

The Assistant will be trained in the use of the Manuscript online
cataloguing system, and will work through the manuscripts creating entries that
describe each of them as fully as possible, tracking down authors, theatres of
first production and sometimes sources or analogues, and describing the plays
so that they can be accessed by scholars in all disciplines. S/he will be
interested in the art and social history of the Victorian period, with a PhD in
theatre studies or a similar area; a reading knowledge of French would be
useful, as would a temperament inclined to perfectionism and accuracy, and an
inexhaustible and persistent curiosity about the history of performance.

Salary will be in the range Â21,594 - Â24,641 p.a. inclusive.
