[Marxism] Elections in Iraqi

There was an interesting press release reported on Juan
Cole's site. It came from the Al Sistani camp and the
overall tone was distincly defensive about pushing for the
elections. Sistani's gang also held out this carrot:

"It is entirely possible, he [Sistani spokesperson] said,
that the same institutions might demand that the Occupying
powers depart from Iraq, supporting this stance by its
popular legitimacy."

So according to Sistani voting is the way to get rid of the
Americans. Not true of course, but what is significant is
that Sistani feels obliged to come out and defend his anti-
occupation credentials.

All this means that any talk of the Shia being won over to
the American side has been greatly exaggerated. In this
context it is also important to note that Al Sadr has
strengthened his opposition to the elections. He has of
course a number of proxies standing in the election, but he
himself professes to be in favour of a boycott. His latest
statement also has him talking of "our dear Sunnis". Perhaps
he is making another attempt to outflank Sistani.

American policy in Iraq continues to twist and turn in
despearation. Every time they announce a goal or a
breakthrough it proves to be yet another shite sandwich.

regards

Gary
