Dear Zivko, and the "dear" is honest:
To begin with, I announced publicly that I was beginning a new
thread, which was triggered however by your "mass populace"
definition.
I don't agree with your idea that my "concern is over things that
bear no relevance to the original discussion". When I asked you
about your usage of "mass populace", and I beg you to remember that I
had written a new "Subject" line for that mail, I was obviously
stepping aside from the original discussion. This was a _new_
discussion. You may think the discussion has nothing to do with the
previous one, I may think it does. But of course it was an entirely
new issue.
My concerns _do_ bear relevance to your way to refer to your speaking
of "mass populace" when you speak of the Yugoslav people,
particularly the poorest among the Yugoslavs..
Maybe you answered my question (e) with a "forced" yes. It could
have been (but it was not) a "forced" no. You say that you say "yes"
to make me happy. You are not making me any happier with that
answer. I am not a prosecutor. I am trying to understand, and help
those interested enough to read both of us to understand, the
difficulties of doing revolutionary politics in a semi-colonial
country.
And, certainly, I am sure that _on this point_ your way to analyze
history somehow departs from good Marxism. Since this is a Marxist
list, I find it somehow worth noting.
I would also finally add that though I am not quite knowledgeable on
things Yugoslavian, I would say that hyperinflation produced two
distinct kinds of reaction
(a) Among Croatians and Slovenes
[Not "in Croatia and Slovenia", among other reasons because Serbs in
Croatia did not agree and were massively subject to a NATO-sponsored
ethnic cleansing operation]
A strong will for secession in the Northern, "rich", "Central
European", sections of the country: those formerly belonging to the
Austro Hungarian Empire, those that had been known as a part of the
"German Slavs" -like the Czechs, by the way, who were only too happy
to shrugg off their shoulders "backwards" Slovakia-, those expressing
a will to follow their own way and let that the devil take those who
stood behind. And this will cannot be attributed to hyperinflation,
as you seem to be doing (but perhaps I am misunderstanding you).
It had been the drop that made the cup too full, but old sectional
claims that they were "sucked dry" by the South were quite old, and
reminiscent of the League North of Italy by the way --I would even
dare ask whether the strong influence of the reactionary Italian
church on the Croatians and Slovenians, particularly under Mussolini,
had left no traces in vast masses of the population of both
Republics.
(b) among the Serbs and Montenegrins
A strong will to keep the union in the South, particularly (but not
only) in Serbia. Of course, this "went in the interest of Serbia",
but the fact is that _the interest of Serbia was coincident with the
struggle for unity_.
Of course, as you could easily answer that this should be subject to
very complex qualifications, I hurry up to concede the point. But I
am afraid that, as a general bottom line, my description above is,
sadly enough, quite coherent with what actually happened.
And, I am quite afraid, not unrelated with your -now I dare say it
with full thrust- derogatory vision of the mass of the Yugoslav
people.
Which I certainly don't share.
