[Marxism] Czechoslovakia 1968

Hi,

I was just watching footage from the late 1960s of Noam Chomsky being
interviewed. During the course of their discussion, Chomsky was harangued by
his ultra-aggressive interviewer for not drawing as much attention to the
crimes of the USSR as he did to those (non-existent for the right-wing host)
crimes of American crusaders for freedom. The interviewer suggested that
residents of Prague that year knew quite how awful the political system that
the US was globally challenging was. Chomsky replied that residents of
Guatemala would not support the idea that the US was at all interested in
democracy.

It seems patently obvious to me, although admittedly I know little of the
activities of the Soviet Army in Czechoslovakia, that residents of Prague
were not being massacred, mutilated, tortured, or bombed like the poor
people of Guatemala. Nor was the Soviet Army's invasion motivated by the
same Imperial concerns as the US' subjugation of Guatemala. Can anyone on
the list please direct me toward any articles or books that deal with the
so-called Prague Spring from the most objective standpoint? I am aware that
the uprisings in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 have been
brought up on the list before, apparently to the moderator's chagrin. But as
long as it is not breaking any list rules, I would appreciate people's
recommendations.

all the best
