I can't believe Jose didn't bring our attention to this:
Today the Venezuelan press reports that the government has formally
issued a decree (English translation) which prioritizes the use of
free/open source software over proprietary systems in government entities.
This follows a year of pilot deployments in Venezuela's Info Centros
(Internet public access points) and some ministries. (Past attempts,
reported by Slashdot, by former Minister of Science and Technology Felipe
Perez Marti to push ahead this initiative were allegedly foiled by
Microsoft.) The decree calls for plans to actively deploy FOSS during a
24-month period."
This is quite known in the Linux Movement/Open-source Movement, since they
initially anounced the pilot a year ago.
I actually moderate a currently very small and low volume list for issues
regarding Marxism and the Linux/Open souce issues: "Marxism-Penguinism". It
has been highly inactive, but some interesting but tentative discussions
have happened there.
One of the issues is that ironically, it runs on a yahoogroups server, but
this is due to a lack of infrastructure, and we are working on it.
You can take a look, even if just to see the very cool logo of the "Che
Linux", I did. Some members of this list are already there.

"A multi-lingual group dedicated to good humoredly sectarian theoretical and
practical discussion of Linux and the Open Source Movement (OSM), from the
perspective of the marxist and marx-influenced revolutionary left. It also
seeks to bring together computer writers and workers in the revolutionary
left to network and know each other in an online environment directed solely
at computer-oriented people. Polemics not directly related to Linux and OSM
will not be tolerated.
Looking for native speakers of other european languages to translate this
intro.

Polemicas no relacionadas
directamente con Linux y OSM no seran toleradas.
Buscamos nativos de otras lenguas europeas para traducir este texto
introductorio. "
I am also a member of the official mailing list of the Linux Movement in
Cuba, hosted in their site:
http://www.linux.cu/
It is highly technical but interesting nevertheless.
