RE: [Marxism] Dietzgen
Again, I urge people to look beneath the labels. The differences
between socialist, communist and anarchist are historically blurred,
notwithstanding what the competing papacies might argue.
Originally--back in the First International--these things were seen, I
think correctly, as reflecting more a difference of emphasis. Since,
there have been plenty elaborations of "anarchist" and "socialist" views
that were and are clearly dead wrong, so those who prefer one label or
another have plenty of selective evidence to persuade themselves that
they are absolutely right.
In the end, I think Joseph Dietzgen was fairly consistently a Marxist in
the best sense. During the repression of the anarchists after the
Haymarket Affair in Chicago, he took over editing the anarchist press
for a while. Like many "socialists" (and many "anarchists"), he
believed the division between the two camps was deceptive. Dietzgen
understood that neither was a coherent camp, for starters, and they
still aren't.
Solidarity!
