And in fact one of the forms of subsidy is the discrepancy between domestic and
international flights, each with their own profitability. Similar thing was the
case with the old Bell System, and deregulation there as well meant workers
paid the price of splitting up into separate companies: some died, some merged,
all slashed.

Some have argued (I have never followed up on the details of the
argument) that if you total up the profits and losses of the _entire_
airline industry from the Wright Brothers to the present, the bottom
line is a loss. Particular companies make money for a while, but not in
the long run. Air Ports, however, make a great deal of money, as do
various other auxiliary services. But air passenger service can survive
only as it is subsidized in one way or another.
