Some have argued (I have never followed up on the details of the
argument) that if you total up the profits and losses of the _entire_
airline industry from the Wright Brothers to the present, the bottom
line is a loss. Particular companies make money for a while, but not in
the long run. Air Ports, however, make a great deal of money, as do
various other auxiliary services. But air passenger service can survive
only as it is subsidized in one way or another.
