While some make comparisons with Vietnam or Algeria, I too started
thinking about Ireland.
However, the possibilities which the Iraqi resistance has is much wider
due to the geo-political situation of Iraq and because of the epoch in
which it is taking place.
From the very start I always found there was something absurd about the
choice of Iraq for this adventure.
The strategic attraction of Iraq to the U.S. is also what makes it such
a dangerous place for them to be.
Before the war started I started a thread elsewhere entitled "arabic
youth will clap their hands in glee at the arrival of USuk troops" in
the ironic sense that they would now have the troops where they could
get at them.
The thread title was changed because the word "arab" was considered
racist, but I chose "arab" rather than "iraqui" to highlight that the
USuk troops were moving into an area, rather than just a country.
Who is to say that one day the strategy won't change from driving them
out, to keeping them bogged down there if pan-arab consciousness
develops as the situation worsens for the USuk coalition?
Idle speculaltion ? Well, non-idle threats have been made in the
direction of both Syria and Iran by Washington, and its aim of
encircling Russia has been noted and commented on by Putin.
Hence, as already noted, planty of others have an interest in the USuk
defeat, not just in the form of a foreign policy set-back in Iraq, but
also as an international defeat which will re-establish multi-lateralism
into which the U.S. can be welcomed as a "mere mortal" rather than as
demi-god.
I add these speculations to highlight the difference between the
situation in Iraq and the possibilities of further developments in
contrast to the situation in Ireland, an island, Vietnam, a coastal
country of S.E.Asia and Algeria, a country with the Sahara as its
hinterland.
BTW, the Stalinist (apparently now anti-Leninist) and non-Stalinsts
movements, must be relieved that they are not fighting on the same
side....;-)
