Re: [Marxism] UFPJ et. al
I agree with Victor and Carroll. What UFPJ and others are doing is just what
SDS did earlier as recounted in a post earlier today: that is, in the name of
"upping the ante" or building a more profound antiwar movement, retreating from
mass action.
And what kept the mass demos going? The coordinated intervention of Marxists in
the antiwar movement, who promoted open, decision-making national conferences,
where those who wanted to continue the mass marches could VOTE to call them.
No reason we can't do the same today -- although it would help if all Marxists
found a way to coordinate ourselves first on this goal.

I agree with you 100% Carrol. Unfortunately the (liberal) leadership of
the UFPJ is holding us back, so it is time for a wake up call (thus my
harsh criticism of Klein and the frustration-- which I detect you share
as well--with the national steering committee of UFPJ).
UFPJ hasnt been helpful to facilitate national, nor grassroots-local
organizing (example-- they havent updated in a timely manner their
website when we, the antiwar movement at Stony Brook Uni. and Suffolk
County, Long Island--of which my group SJA http//www.sbusja.org is a
part of--, needed to post events and make some important contact
information changes).
But in fairness, I dont think any of the big national organizations have
been very helpful. We havent got much out of the Campus Anti-war
network, for instance. I would extend my criticism to US Labor Against
the War (USLAW) as well.
It would be nice to have a VISIBLE national network or coalition that
our very busy and active local groups could plug into for financial
support, a speakers bureau, a nice website with frequent news and
updates of what is going on internationally and nationally, frequent
forums and meetings at the regional and local level, and much more
direct communication and networking.
Basically, we have been busting our asses out here and are getting very
little help from the big national organizations, which have tremendous
potential of mobilizing human and financial resources for the movement.
One could argue that local, autonomous organizing is the way to go
anyway, but I think we need national and international solidarity to
build the movement and make ourselves effective at all levels of
strategic organizing.
peace,
victor
