Re: [Marxism] A Tale of Two Sisters

Hey - this is really my area! When I first saw the subject I really thought it was a mail on one of the Asian Horror mailing lists I'm subscribed to...

A Tale of Two Sisters is perhaps the best Asian movie I've ever watched. It is scary as shit - it has to be watched to fully grasp it.

Still, I say "perhaps", as I have problems seeing the social commentary part. If I am to recommend any Asian movie for its social commentary content, I would rank "Suicide Circle" as some of the very best social commentary ever shown on screen. Also, "Battle Royale" and "Kairo" have contents which are highly critical to the development of Japanese society in a way I don't see "A Tale of Two Sister". But perhaps I was too scared when watching it to catch this part :=).

Still, highly recommended. I've only watched it at home on DVD, and I can't even imagine how it will be theatrically. The only ones I'd suggest not to watch the movie at the cinema would be those with a bad heart - that would be dangerous!

I'll second that. This was the first Korean film to compete with the Japanese New Wave of Horror on its own terms rather than simply trying to blandly imitate it. Like many Japanese or Korean horror films, it's as much social commentary as it is horror.
