[Marxism] Re: Forwarded from Victor R.

Well, not explicitly a critique of corrupt NGOs and Fair Trade, but the
following book may be of some interest. Earlier this year, Joe Heath and
Andrew Potter published a book called: "Rebel Sell: Why The Culture Can't Be
Jammed" I have not read the book myself, but from what I have read, namely
articles discussing its thesis, the book seems as though it may be of some
interest too you.
Joe Heath is an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at the
University of Toronto; and Andrew Potter is a research fellow at the Centre
de Recherché en Éthique de l'Université de Montréal (CREUM), where he
studies philosophical issues regarding the Internet, technology, and
consumer society. They believe there is no difference between ?mainstream?
and ?alternative? culture; and instead posit the argument that the only
possible conclusion is that the counterculture is not a threat to the
?system??it is the system. The book seems to be primarily a discussion of
the underlying arguments put forth by Fair Trade advocates and people such
as Adbusters and their god-awful Blackspot Sneakers.
Hopefully it will give you some insight into the matters you mentioned.
Ashley
An article on the book from This Magazine:
