RE: [Marxism] A query
It is really a serious thing if such types [as Timothy Garton Ash] appear
as Left.
Not meaning Charlie Parks is in trouble. The First World, actually,
is. And thus, the globe.

Well, don't start panicking yet, at least not on my account. The First World
is undoubtedly in trouble, and in the US in particular, the mainstream media
would have no trouble designating people like Timothy Garton Ash as being of
the Left. In the American media, "liberal" can mean "Left" and vice-versa;
one frequently hears quaint conceits describing someone as being "more
*liberal* than Karl Marx," and I recall reading a review of Brecht's
Caucasian Chalk Circle in which the reviewer referred to Brecht's "liberal,
socialist ideas."
Nevertheless...I have never considered Timothy Garton Ash a leftist; rather,
I was mentioning him along with Anne Appelbaum as members of the chorus of
Western liberals who are always urging support for "humanitarian
interventions" using leftish rhetoric (phrases like "anti-fascism,"
"national liberation for Kosovars," etc). Now, if you want examples of
soi-disant leftists who supported the bombing of Yugoslavia, you can look to
Bogdan Denitch, Ian Williams or the editors of New Politics ("A journal of
socialist thought"), but I haven't come across anything they've written on
Ukraine.
Best,
CP
