I believe here economic and political issues merge in some kind of a
totality. The ethnic Russian neo-bourgeois elites from Eastern Ukraine seem
to stand for somekind of an "All-Russian" recovery of the old USSR along
nationalist-bourgeois lines - something akin to the various Latin American
populist régimes of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s - while the Ukrainian-proper
élites from Western Ukraine, sharing the same class outlook , seem to favour
passive integration as a compradore bourgeoisie on the periphery of the
imperialist core -something akin to today's Chile and its enclave economy.
It is as Ukrainian nationalism had made, in a way, the same fateful choice
that Engels wrote Scot nationalism to have made in the middle of the
XVIIIth. century , and that led to its crushing defeat at Culloden: to stand
by the most reactionary side avaliable (that of my namesake, the Jacobite
pretender) and therefore domming itself as a political force in the
medium/long range. But then, this is only an speculation...
