[Marxism] Evolution: Nature and Political Economy (Robert Brenner follow-up)

Gould DIDN'T believe that "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny," but
specifically rejected that formulation of Ernst Haeckel's, as do
most modern evolutionary biologists. In fact, he wrote a book on
that theory, called, appropriately enough, Ontogeny and Phylogeny.
He considered it an essentialist concept.

Actually, the view that capitalism was NOT destined to emerge (Robert
Brenner, et al.) is consonant with the view that mankind was NOT
destined to emerge (Gould, et al.). Evolution of both nature and
political economy is characterized by long periods of equilibrium
punctuated by crises through which new forms emerge.
