[Marxism] Will socialist government of Spain act against E. Guinea coup plotters?

SPAIN BACKED EQUATORIAL GUINEA COUP PLOT

A senior Equatorial Guinea official has accused the former Spanish
government of involvement in the plot to overthrow President Teodoro
Obiang Nguema. National security adviser Ruben Maya told the BBC that
mercenaries involved in the plot said they had been backed by Spain's
security services.

"All the threats Equatorial Guinea is facing come from Spain," Mr Maya
told the BBC's Network Africa. He stressed that it was the former
government of Jose Maria Aznar, which lost March elections, which he
was accusing of involvement. "We hope that the [current] Spanish
government will condemn the activities of the former government," he
said.

The U.S. knew and Britain knew, but the spotlight now is above all on
Spain, the former colonial ruler. This is the country that could most
effectively back the coup plotters, which apparently included an exile
opposition leader now living in Spain.

The question now is how will the new Spanish socialist government of
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero follow up on the information that is being
revealed. This information, of course, has long been in its hands. The
"socialist" Spanish government itself should have publicized and
prosecuted the criminal actions of the Aznar party as soon as it
learned of the plot. Now its hand is being forced. What sort of
investigation will take place and what action will be taken against
Spanish security agencies?

The same goes for the Blair government. Jack Straw is getting most of
the attention. But Peter Mandelson, Blair's closest political ally, who
he has rescued time and again despite actions that patently violate the
moral Christian precepts that Blair claims to support, is deeply
implicated as well. For more on the strange career of Mandelson, go to

Below are some more news articles and a hint at how the U.S., the
ultimate "backer" of the coup backers, might be employed to aid in
restructuring the Gulf of Guinea.

US hints at navy deployment to secure oil-rich Gulf of Guinea.

A top US military commander has said his country was willing to
cooperate with Nigeria in monitoring the waters of the Gulf of Guinea
to secure the alternative source of oil to the Middle East.

"I think it is a hugely important issue to Nigeria as well as other
countries in the Gulf of Guinea," local newspaper the Guardian quoted
General Charles Wald, deputy commander of the US military's European
Command for Europe and Africa, as saying on Tuesday. Wald held talks on
Monday with Nigerian military officials, including Nigerian Minister of
State for Defense Rowland Oritsejafor and service chiefs, in the
Nigerian capital of Abuja. "It is up to the political leadership to
decide if it is in their common interest to protect the area. If they
do, we will firmly support that," he said, referring to the deployment
of US naval troops in the region that holds as much as 10 percent of
the world's oil reserves.
. . . Wald also said the United States was looking forward to expanding
training and helping equip regional groups in Africa "to support
African leaders in regional peacekeeping."
