RE: [Marxism] Alexander
Ren,
Of Alexander's sexuality, you wrote, "it means something in our world.
The point I made has to do with how the west popularly imagines heroes,
which presupposes a conservative view of their sexuality."
If you aren't interested in Alexander and history but in how homophobic
audiences might perceive the movie "Alexander," you may be right.
However, you wrote of Alexander's empire, "Models of imperialism don't
fall out of historical vacuums; they have a basis in antecedent
movements towards geopolitical domination."
On this one, you're trying to make an argument about history based on a
movie, and it seems to me to be an entirely wrong-headed one that
entirely ignores context. Western imperialism isn't rooted generally in
these "antecedent movements towards geopolitical domination," but in the
specific structure of industrial capitalism.
As to Alexander, he was, from some perspectives, just a short-lived
Hellenistic interloper chronologically wedged between a long succession
of Middle Eastern empires. Certainly, Alexander's "antecedent
movements" is hardly "western" culturally or geographically.
...of course, if the subject is going to shift back from history to the
movie, and the immeasurable possible perceptions of this movie, I'm
pretty much at a loss of understanding anything with much certainty....
Solidarity!
Mark L.
