HOW THE US AND BRITAIN ARE INTERVENING IN UKRAINE'S

supporters, druggy skinheads
from Lvov. They belonged to Ukrainian National Self-Defence (Unso), a
semi-paramilitary movement . Were nutters like this to be politically
active in
any country other than Ukraine or the Baltic states, there would be instant
outcry in the US and British media; but in former Soviet republics, such
bogus nationalism is considered anti-Russian and therefore democratic.

But then, why not? The bogus nature of such "nationalism", devoid of any
progressive elements whatsoever, consists in being an anti-Russian movement
_only_, that's to say a movment not in response to anything approaching
Ukrainian national interest, but only the expression of a breakaway
neo-bourgeois nomenklatura wonting at becoming a minor comprador partner of
the imperialist West in order to buy an insurance policy against any
prospects of the Ukraine being reabsorbed into a renewed USSR, or a
bourgeois nationalist "Pan-Russian" Federation.

The Ukrainian "elections" appear to be the kind of electoral fiction we had
in Latin America until the 1930s roughly, a farce laden with so much fraud
on borth sides that wanting to sort anything like an "actual" result becomes
simply impossible. What makes impossible to approach it with a "plague on
both your houses motto" is exactly the fact that an authoritarian populist
Pan-Russian Empire would stay, as compared to a compradorUkraine , in the
same relationship as Vargas dictatorship as against the previous Brazilian
oligarchic republic.

As for me, I have decided on this issue by seeing a photo of Lech Walesa
offering support for Yushchenko in a rally. Now, Walesa is for me one of the
most disgusting political figures of our time, and as far as anything
relating to him is concerned, I react not only as a Marxist but as a Groucho
Marx fan: I would decline entrance into this club even if - or perhaps
because of - being accepted into it.
