I fully agree with Carlos in that the most important Trotsky for our
times is the "Outcast".
As to Deutscher's focus on the "Tragic" character of LDT's last
years, I would add that it is not only attributable to his hopes in a
socialist "thaw", but also to a more central fact, that Deutscher
never came to consider the October Revolution as the first stage of
the general rebellion of the semicolonial countries (which in part it
was: please remember, for instance, the weight of W. European capital
in Russian industry by WWI). He considered it from a quite strictly
European point of view, as the coronation of the process of
revolutions that had been triggered in England, during the 17th
Century, and was now coming to an end with a new wave.
When reading the trilogy, I always have a (maybe mistaken) sense that
Deutscher was still wondering "why didn't Western Europe answer to
the call from Moscow and left them alone instead?", as if this were
his most important concern.
