[Marxism] Re: Deutscher's trilogy reviewed.

Dear listmates:

The existence of Isaac Deutscher's trilogy, by its own power as a classic of
marxist biography, in the same way that it has kept Trotsky's memory alive
for almost a half century, by the same token hampers our understandung of
Lev Davidovich's importance for today. The importance of Trotsky for today
concerns, in my view, mostly the 1929-1940 "Outcast" Prophet, who tried to
project the October Revolution into the entirely difference ambience of the
imperialist bourgeois democracies and also tried to make a "premature"- but
neverthless mostly corect - summing-up of the strenghts and shortcomings of
the Soviet experiment. Led astray by his quite normal- at the time-
post-Stalin "Thaw" illusions, Deutscher almost ignored this Trotsky except
as a tragic figure. Therefore the all-pressing need for a reassessment of
the later Trotsky, who could function as a bridge linking the Leninist past
with today's needs.
