Dear Walter, I observe and comment an _evolution_ on the part of
The Militant and the SWP. And I hold on to my rule that one should
stick to the facts in this case as in every other, and not hasten to
premature conclusions and sweeping generalizations.

As to the Elian case, you might remember the letter which I had
written to The Militant on their article back then, and which I made
public to this list not long time ago (and which was sent to all SWP
branches and CLs back then).

"The most pernicious lies are truths, slightly distorted" noted
Georg-Christoph Lichtenberg, a German physicist and writer of the late
18th and early 19th century.

The Militant was correct in stating that the INS raid on the house,
where Elian Gonzalez were kept, was an exercise in the way that the
INS was raiding many other working peoples homes, but The Militant
left out the context, i.e. that this was the last resort of the US
government to avoid the mass mobilization that Elian's father had
announced, that he would march to that house with thousands of US
citizens to fetch his son. This context was also left out by many many
people who applauded Janet Reno's initiative.

With their description of the US offensive against Fallujah as just
a game between them and the "Baathist remnants", as if it did not
concern the general Iraqi population, is a distinctive step in the
rightward evolution of the US SWP.

BTW, there is one other development in the SWP which worries me -
their seem to revert their stance on nuclear power. While I too do
defend the right of Iran to develop their country and their weaponry
as they see fit, without a dictate of imperialism thru the IAEO, I see
it as completely wrong to assume that a workers and farmers government
or a socialist society could turn artificial radioactivity into a safe
source of energy, as some phrases in The Militant seem to suggest.
That would be rather a return to the charlatanery of Lyssenko, but not
to scientific thinking in the spirit of Karl Marx.
