[Marxism] Re: Political films

The Molly MacQuires starring Sean Connery, and speaking of
Connery I also like Zardoz by Boorman that gets a lot of
trashing but is very distopian.

Serio Leone's Duck you Sucker aka A Fist Full of Dynamite
starring James Coburn as an exiled IRA revolutionary that
is a vanguardist sucking in some Mexican bandits into
becoming revolutionaries. They are being hunted by
Maxmillians army, which is led by a very Nazi looking
german in a Tank. At one point Coburn is reading Bakunin in
his tent when the Mexican bandit tells him that no matter
who wins the revolution the peasants will still suffer.

For a great IRA film Hidden Agenda from Ken Loach is
excellent for revealing the dirty tricks done by the UK
government in setting up and murdering human rights
activists in Ireland, based on a real case.
Loach of course also did the terrific, fabulous, wonderful
Land and Freedom on the Spanish Civil War. and since then
he has done other great films, which are all well worth
watching.

westerns, how about Missouri Breaks with Nicholson and
Brando directed by Arthur Miller. Deals with the fact the
largest landowner is also the judge.

Tombstone captures the class nature of the west, there are
protests for the eight hour day, reformers of all kinds.

And speaking of Brando, Burn! is an excellent critique of
colonialism, nationalist revolution in the Caribbean with a
terrific sound track by Ennio Morricone.

And speaking of related films and sound track Morricone did
the sound track with Joan Baez to the film Sacco and
Vannzetti.

And lets not forget Alien the first cargo ship in space,
where the engineering crew complain that their cut isn't as
big as the scientists and they are going to complain to
their union. That and the way the lights don't work well
when they first wake up is a nice detail, that reminds us
that space travel is an extension of modern work....which
also leads to Outland...again with Connery about a corrupt
corporation explointing workers on an astroid, with the
western theme of High Noon.

And finally for a great western, who can not forget the
Magnificient Seven.

Civil War, my vote is for Glory. A great historical
film, that I watch over and over again.
