We are planning a series of films to be shown through the winter on
political subjects, broadly defined, relavant to the existing American
scene. "The Battle For Algiers" is one I have in mind (for the Iraq
mess), but also films dealing with labor issues and corporate crime and
media manipulation of the mass mind, like "Running Man" and "Wag the
Dog."

Here are a few more:

"In the Name of the Father", a great film about the framing of the
Guildford Four - it really brought back the period to me (and it has a
brilliant soundtrack).

The original "MASH" I would also recommend. "Z" and "The Confession" by
Costa Gavras - indeed most of his films are worth seeing. Sergio Leone's
movies, particularly "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Once Upon a
Time in America".

And even though he's a Republican I thought Clint Eastwood's biopic
about Charlie Parker was a great anti-racist film. Another good one
about jazz (also quite political) is "Round Midnight" - I can't remember
the director's name. "The Cotton Club" is also quite good on the race.
And we shouldn't forget "Cabaret".
