I too am alarmed that Rumsfeld and co. plan use their troops against us.

Here's something that got my attention and started some thinking a
while back:

That the "New World Order" (Bush I with continuity through Clinton)
entailed an adios to the Posse Comitatus Act is something which has
greatly exercised and invigorated right wing extremists, including for
instance, Timothy McVeigh.

As I understand it, the Posse Comitatus Act prevented the federal
government from sending troops to supervise elections following the
American Civil War.  In other words it helped bring an end to Radical
Reconstruction.  If that is the case posse comitatus might be seen
instead as fundamentally counter-revolutionary.  For a related example,
many of us believe that federal troops sent to enforce desegregation
was fundamentally progressive.
