When Louis (yesterday?) mentioned the Ukraine as an example of important
issues we should be discussing I was glad and knew I'd soon see useful
pieces like the one by Fred Weston which he posted today. Fred notes that
because both sides are pro-capitalist, at some point the policies of the
"opposition" [sic] ... "will have an effect on the political scenario as
well, as millions of Ukrainians will lose any illusions they may now have
in the present opposition."

That may be very far down the road, as Fred seems to sense. But how the
Ukrainian workers -- and all those in Eastern Europe and the former
Soviet Union who are increasingly disillusioned with 15 years of
"democracy" and "freedom" -- can take advantage of splits in their ruling
classes is extremely important for all of us.

The imperialists may be more in trouble in Iraq (not so much in
Palestine). But it's incumbent on us to oppose their efforts to impose a
government on the Ukraine. If they get away with that it weakens every
anti-imperialist movement -- and makes it harder for a pro-working class
current in Ukraine to be formed.  The flip side of that is that a
stronger working class current in the Ukraine also gives space for an
anti-Putin working class current in Russia.
