There were and are hundreds of thousands of "Guest workers" from
Jugoslavia in (West) Germany, they were for some tine the strongest
contingent e.g. here in Frankfurt am Main. This started loooong time
ago.
So they all brought their money home from Germany.
Also Jugoslavia, especially Serbia, was a place where kind of
maquiladoras worked for German companies, e.g. in the textile
industry, just sewing clothes which were cut in Germany, and sold
here. This was ended with the embargo imposed by the "international
community" under leadership of the USA. These plants were ruined and
the German principal had to look for maquiladoras in other countries.
Also, the very popular cheap red wine from Kosovo, "Amselfelder"
(which is the German adjective form of Kosovo, or Blackbird Fields)
could no longer be exported to Germany. The US really did ruin quite a
number of long dated economic cooperation between German capitalism
and Tito's Jugoslavia.
The DEM (Deutsche Mark, DM) was declared official currency in
Kosovo after the war, and is now certainly replaced by the Euro.
In Albania, though, they prefer the USD, I heard.
