Well, many sources and analysts share the idea that, at least, West
Germany took the pole position from the US at first, forcing the
latter to build up their own "nationality" on the "Bosnia Muslims",
because WG -quite naturally- found the Slovenes and Croatians as
their natural allies in the break up Jugoslavija. A long tradition
of the ruling groups in these countries, BTW, if one substitutes
Vienna for Berlin it dates back to the late Middle Ages.
However, German influence over the Danube Basin as a whole cannot be
underrated. One of the things that stroke me most strongly when I
visited Belgrade, in 2001, was that the local petty bourgeoisie, when
they talked in terms of "international money", made their reference
to DMarks, not to USDollars. I am speaking of common people who were
strongly anti-Milosevic. If _I_ could realize this, it is obvious for
me that one can count on the US leadership to understand it better.
West Germany, most probably, did not _manipulate_ the USA. But what
is for sure is that the USA realized that West Germany was going to
become the sole winner in the destruction of Jugoslavija. Thus, they
changed their original position (keeping the country united under a
Quisling regime) and made their bet to thorough, murderous, illegal
and criminal break up with as much bloodshed as possible. And with
an American military base in Kossovo.
Thus, among other niceties, they brought al-Qaeda democrats to drill
the troops of the newly created Muslim "nationality" (more or less as
if Catholic Germans were christened a nationality...) And they
bestowed democracy on the painstriken remains of what once had been a
unified country, full of hope, with young guardsmen singing
revolutionary songs along frontiers that were well kept from
invasions, either from the East or from the West.
There is a legend in Northern Argentina, the "Uturunco" legend. The
Uturunco is a monster that kills and eats people, and it is said to
appear in the woodlands on the mountain slopes, as well as in the
cane fields. Like a werewolf, it can assume human figure. A great
Argentinean playwright, in a tremendously perceptive vision of the
immediate future, wrote a play which carried the name "El Uturunco
estaba entre nosotros", which means "The Uturunco was among us".
There existed an Uturunco among Yugoslavs, and nobody was more aware
of this than the German bourgeoisie. In this sense, they did not
manipulate the US, but they simply worked their way into Jugoslavija
faster and more thoroughly than the US, thus forcing them into the
massacre.
