Re: [Marxism] A mad morning thought re Clinton and what the war is doing "to ...

The same thing is going on now. The process is slowed down by the fact
that there are no other social movements like the civil rights movement
which go deeply into the real masses of the population. The antiwar
movement is still a socially narrow movement, and an antiwar movement is
not enough by itself to rock the society in the way that happened in the
1960s. But unless the rulers can recreate the prosperity and relative
stability of the 1950s into the early 1960s, these are on the way.
You know, it's funny, but as a Marxist, trying to analyse and consider things
dialectically, I think Bush's reelection was a good thing in terms of helping
to build resistance to him domestically and internationally. I also think,
though I wouldn't say it out loud at, say, an antiwar demo, that a draft would
be a good thing for the same reason.
Only when the war hits home, impacts people materially or socially, will
there be anything like a mass movement against it.
At present, the annihilation of Iraq is still just something that's happening
on the news, like the latest Britney Spears tidbit, etc. Last night, myself
and four or five comrades stood at a busy intersection in Los Angeles holding
antiwar signs and placards. As I stood there watching shiny new Mercedes and
Lexus pass by in one never-ending stream, I was gripped by an almost
overwhelming desire to see this fucking country destroyed. How can they go on
as if
nothing is happening when innocent people are being slaughtered by their
government
ever single day in a far off land?
Such a selfish, greedy, venal people the world has never seen. I used to give
the American people the benefit of the doubt and maintain that their apathy
was a consequence of an ignorance that isn't their fault; rather the fault of a
collusion between the mainstream media and a government intent on concealing
the truth. Not anymore. Now I just think they couldn't really give a shit
about anything except driving a Lexus or a Mercedes and getting laid on a
regular
basis.
They deserve everything that's coming to them.
