Hungary to Pull Out of Iraq by Year-End

Budapest, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) Hungary will withdraw troops from Iraq
by the end of this year after Parliament defeated a government effort to

extend their presence in the Gulf country until March 31, 2005, MTI news

agency reported.

The government needed two thirds of the National Assembly (256 out of
386 members) to support Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany's
proposal, but only 192 voted for it and 159 against.

The Hungarian government argued it was its duty to remain in Iraq
after elections scheduled for January 27.

But elections might be indefinitely postponed as resistance to US-led
occupation increases country-wide, The Guardian daily quoted Iraqi
interim vice-prime minister Barham Salih as admitting.

Hungary has about 300 logistics specialists stationed in a Polish
base in Al Hilla, south of Baghdad, as part of a multinational
contingent that joined the US-led occupation.

At least 10 Hungarian troops were wounded, two of them seriously, in
a car-bomb attack at the base on February 18.
