[Marxism] Walking boss (was: Boulder h-school band under attack ...)

speaking of amazing songs, last nite at the local coffee house a 3 piece band
played a bunch of ole timey music (guitar, fiddle, and bass).

one song just blew me away. it was a slow, very somber blues-like tune. the
guitar picking was so good i couldnt focus enough to hear the words at all.

but i knew within 20 seconds this had to be a working person song. i assume it
started out its life in one of the red (US) states. i'd like to read a good
history of this music. i googled some last nite and found all kinds of stuff
on Southern prison gangs, but nothing specific to this song.

also learned last nite: the shotgun-toting cop with dark sunglasses in Cool
Hand Luke was a "walkin boss".

=================================

Walking Boss
(Doc Watson version)

Walkin' boss,
walkin' boss.
Yes you're the boss.
But I don't belong to you.

I belong,
yes I belong,
and I can get along,
with that steel drivin' crew.

When I ask that boss man
for a job.
I said i wanna job.
And he said son,
what can you do?

I can line track.
I can line up track.
I can pull a jack.
I can pick and shovel too.

Walkin' boss,
Oh walkin' boss.
Yes you're the boss.
But I don't belong to you.

I belong,
yes I belong,
and I can get along,
with that steel drivin' crew.

[amazing banjo solo]

Work one day,
one hard day.
And draw no pay,
and just go live
in the shanty too.

Walkin' boss,
yes, you're the boss.
You're the boss.
But I don't belong to you.

I belong,
yes I belong,
and I can get along,
with that steel drivin' crew.
