Whatever Vietnam's evolution, some aspects of its traditional politics have
remained rock solid, in particular the extremely special place it reserves
for Cuba, seen as a special relationship beyond all others, and its
unwavering support for the Palestinian struggle. All dailies have had Arafat
splashed over the front pages with strongly supportive orbituaries.
Unfortunately, there is no day of mourning as Walter reports from Cuba.
The spokesperson of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Le Dung,
expressed the Vietnamese government's reaction to the death of Yasser
Arafat:
"We are deeply moved and grieved by the death of His Excellency Yasser
Arafat, President of the Government of Palestine, Chairman of the
Palestinian Authority and President of the Palestine Liberation
Organisation".
"His Excellency Yasser Arafat was an outstanding leader, a symbol of the
Palestinian people's struggle, and a great friend of the Vietnamese people."
"Vietnam shares the sorrow of the Palestinian people and we hope that they
will soon overcome their grief and loss and we stand in solidarity with
their just cause towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian
State, contributing to peace and stability in the region and the world."
