Sir:
It seems to me that the closest description of Chinese political economy
is
that of "fascism" -- some state enterprises combined with supporting
corporatism as Mussolini described it while suppressing the working
class
and ignoring their just demands.
Secondly, Jim Craven wrote: "it is true that the primary objective of
socialism is to uproot and destroy capitalist relations etc,". It
seems
to me that Democratic Socialism -- a combination of state and private
enterprise, but putting "people before profits" can exist (as
attempted by
the CCF party in Canada) to create a just and democratic society without
the
need to destroy all capitalist concepts .

Response: Jim C. As a Blackfoot whose lands are occupied in Canada and
the U.S. and as someone from a people on the verge of total
extermination in Canada and the U.S., the old CCF and the new NDP never
had anything to say about, or do for, Indigenous Peoples not of the
Eurocentric persuasion. Capitalism and socialism may co-exist for a time
(never socialism under capitalism but only capitalism under socialism)
but they are like the mongoose and the cobra--mortal enemies by nature
each necessarily bent on the destruction of the other to survive.
The use of fascism to describe China, in addition to being a horrible
slander against a people who have stood up and are standing up against
imperialist onslaughts reflects also, a lack of awareness of what the
term and concept fascism really mean in my opinion. Any neocon diatribe
in the U.S. about China or elsewhere de jure or de facto socialist will
have the same summarily asserted notions misusing some of the same
constructs and terms.
