Barnes characterizes the Iraqi resistance as "bourgeois-led militias"
and simultaneously asserts that the region's bourgeoisie is not "willing
to risk organizing a nationalist resistance to the imperialist
occupation." This kind of double-vision always leads us through to a
zone of comforting bliss: "the political exhaustion of the bourgeois
nationalist and Stalinist forces that for decades substituted for
revolutionary leadership in the region."
Sadly, decades of repitition just hasn't made this mantra a jot more
true.
The repeated lesson is that bourgeois nationalism has always seemed to
show a lot more life and autonomy than that for which the SWP wishes to
credit.
And, btw, this is the jist of my problem with the discussion of black
nationalism--not the terminology, but the seeming naïveté about the
extent to which, I fear, the SWP consistently underestimates the dangers
of a bourgeois nationalism....
Solidarity!
