First people should be clear that the "CNN exit poll" is the exit poll done
jointly for all the five major TV news nets including Faux News and the
Associated Press, a collective of most newspapers in the country. It was
actually done by a partnership of the Edison and Mitofsky public opinion
research firms, a formally called the "National Election Pool."
In an exercise of what the sponsoring outfits understand as journalistic
integrity and transparency, the agreement between the parties allowed them
all to present it as their "own" exit poll rather than a joint effort.
I am aware also of an LA Time exit poll, but outside California it was an
order of magnitude smaller than the Edison-Mitofsky poll.
Second, the 55% figure seems right. In 2000, 53% of voters had household
incomes of $50K or more a year. The most recent figure for median household
income (50% below, 50% above) is $43,500.
For further illustration of the systematic class bias of U.S. elections, I
worked up the following figures based on this year's exit poll data and
government income data:
less than $15,000 a year: 14% of households; 8% of voters
more than $100,000 a year: 14% of households, 18% of voters
more than $150,000 a year: 5% of households, 7% of voters.
Who people vote for is also sharply class polarized: 63% of those with
incomes below $15,000 voted for Kerry; 63% of those with over $150,000 voted
for Bush.

Is anyone else skeptical about the CNN exit poll stat claiming that 52% of
the people who voted make more than $50k per year?
