[Marxism] Re. SWP Offices
Based solely on the questions that are being asked, this doesn't seem
promising. So much detail on internal differences and splits would
present a caricature of the SWP and the influence of the Trotskyist
movement in general.
This includes the distant Minneapolis Strikes and the work in the
Maritime Union as well as other important labor struggles. During my
own time during the student movement, there was the publication of
Malcolm X's speeches, a great deal of civil rights and civil liberties
work (we should never overlook the PRDF suit!), and most of all the
anti-Vietnam War work, which we were involved in from the beginning,
including the Berkeley Vietnam Day Committee and the SDS March.
Aside from the Schactman and Cochrane fights and the harmful results
from the Barnes takeover, it would be sufficient to say that there have
been differences over the structure of the countries that were
incorporated into the Soviet Bloc after WWII and the revolutions in
Yugoslavia, China and Vietnam and the degree to which they were modeled
on the Stalin bureaucracy.
Later there were also differences involving a small number of
individuals over the Cuban Revolution and the attempt to extend it, the
African-American struggle, and the timing and emphasis placed on
turning the party towards the labor movement in the 1970s. Some left
because of these differences, others did not or left as part of the
normal turnover in any revolutionary organization.
In any case, tone and context are important and one should beware using
language that makes all this seem ridiculous.
