can someone fill me us in on the legalities involved here? i thought no one
from any party is allowed within like 100 yards of a polling place during
election day. what exactly is being planned in terms of this harassment?

People are not allowed to hand out literature for the candidates or
encourage them to vote one way or another within a fixed distance of the
polling place. However, the people actually conducting the election are
almost invariably from one or both major parties. Furthermore,
representatives of the candidates are allowed to be present where the voting
is done and the votes are counted to watch the conduct of the election and
make sure that the laws are followed. In practice, this can mean
challenging people's right to vote, arguing that certain ballots should not
be counted, etc.
