Lemme guess (and I'm no astronomist).
1) Refraction of the longer wavelengths through the earth's atmosphere?

2) Reflected sunlight?

3) It's not only lunar gravity that causes the high tide, but centrifugal
force as well. That one I remember from teaching earth science.

pop quiz for materialists:

o if the moon is totally in the earth's shadow how come we see a __red__ disk
during total eclipse?

o how come the dark side of the moon facing us is not totally dark?

o if the moon's gravitational pull is the cause of the ocean tides, how come
there are two high tides a day rather than one?
