I agree with Carrol that "the Left" is largely a placeholder...as is
"the Right." There are positions that might have a place on that
political spectrum, but--at this point--there really is no such thing at
this point as "the" Left or "the" Right, save in that they provide
acceptable shorthand straw arguments.
The reactionaries in the 1950s identified any progressive impulses with
"the" Left, which was dominated by the Communist Party.
The progressives among the ABBs justify their goose-stepping for Kerry
by asserting that "the" Right is behind Bush.
