Others have covered most of this, but I'd like to add one thing:
Talking about "the veil" is one of those seemingly minor language things
that pack a big ideological punch. It conjures up images of the burqa or
other extreme coverings, which in turn bring into our western minds
sinister and exotic notions of completely faceless and isolated women.
That is far from representative. I try never to write  "the veil"
without quotation marks.

My thoughts on Islam are at the link below. I would be grateful for any
comments, especially from people coming from Muslim backgrounds.
