Mahmood--Hijab comes from the word chastity.  It refers to Islamic clothing for 
woman.  Islamic official dress code as enforced in Iran calls for covering the 
entire body with dark loose clothing except just the face, hands, and feet.  
This is the minimum requirement for being safe on the street and not harassed 
by the religious tugs and Islamic moral police.   This is done in several ways. 
 

Veil in Farsi is called Chador which is a piece of cloth that woman put on 
their on their head that covers the the entire body except the face and the 
feet. It is sometimes kept on the body at the chin with one hand from inside 
the cover.  Sometimes to have the both hands free some women use elastic band 
to keep the veil on the their head.

Head scarf is used when woman wear long dress that goes all the way below the 
knees.  They also wear pans underneath the dress. The head scarf has to cover 
the head (all the hair) and the neck.   Just the face can be revealed.  

Wearing just a shirt, pans, and head scarf is not allowed even though all your 
body is covered. Skirt and pans for woman are considered "western corruption 
and immorality."  The rule of thumb is that the body shape of women and their 
hair must be covered otherwise it would provoke men in getting erection and 
becoming horny.  I guess Mohammed did not have to deal with lesbians in his 
time!! Otherwise it would be men and women.

In Iran, after the the Islamic regime came to power, the government erected two 
or three hundred feet long walls into Caspian sea (in some areas) to separate 
men and women's swimming spaces. Nonetheless, woman still have to cover their 
body.   If you have your spouse and your children with you, men and women have 
to swim separately.  Religious tugs, men and woman, tightly control the area in 
case any "crime of immorality" (for example, a woman showing a little bit of 
her hair) is committed. 

As a child a remember Caspian sea was beautiful and fun place for people to go 
for vacation.  Now it is a hell hole; thanks to Islam and Islamic regime. 

Of course, I should say that these brutal rules are defied and challenged on a
