Re: [Marxism] Socialism and Islam
Anybody got any insights on this question from Maxime Rodinson's work? I've
only skimmed Marxism and the Muslim World, but this, and his Islam and
Capitalism, would seem very useful to this discussion. (And his Cult, Ghetto
and State (essays on Jews) are worth reading also as another area in which he
tried to apply a materialist approach.)
In any case I'll take this opportunity to recommend his "Israel and the Arabs"
as perhaps the best one volume introduction to the politics of the entire
region in the 20th Century. For instance in the course of describing the
changing approach of Arab regimes to Israel it's got a fascinating description
of the differences between the Iraq and Syrian regimes and leading parties in
the '50s and '60s.
