I'm not sure where you slot Ireland into this generalisation. A genuine
question, not a sectarian point.

I agree with you here about the usefulness of such a term, but I'm not
sure that one exists. For me Middele East is an elastic term that can
sometimes include Arab North Africa (itself a problematic term) and
spread as far east as Iran and Afghanistan - certainly it was one
cultural are before the advent of imperialism. But I'm not sure how you
can then include the other countries with a Muslim majority from
Pakistan eastwards to Indonesia.
