Or to paraphrase that famous New Yorker cartoon, "On the Internet,
nobody knows you're a Spart!"

It's a perfect late capitalist device...appearances and perceptions

On one hand Mark is very correct as victims of different types of
predators on the net soon find out. On the other hand, the content and
patterns of writings, sources given or not given, subjects discussed or
not discussed, coherency or lack of coherency in argument, reasoning or
lack of reasoning in argument, tone of writing, level of openness to
counter-reasoning and evidence, degree of willingness to embrace
ideologically-uncomfortable ideas that are well supported and/or
willingness to discard ideologically-comfortable arguments not well
supported, level of humility demonstrated in allowing for the possibility
that one could be wrong or that one is advancing an argument not well
supported, level of apparent sectarianism, sense of humor or lack of it,
demonstrable activism witnessed/supported by others, etc etc can be
quite revealing--sort of like a Rohrsach test with a lot more validity
than the old ink-blot test.
