Marla, thanks for posting your talk. Just had time for a quick skim so
far but looks great.
When this topic comes up I always recommend Cockshott and Cottrell's
"Towards a New Socialism" )full text online), and the linked articles by
them on this same page. They say lots on practical questions of computers
and democratic socialist planning:

I had a piece in Monthly Review, later in an MR book, on the topic as
well, and a half-assed website (not updated in years). It basically
strung together many examples of the potential for planning as shown in
current-day capitalist IT. Today, as chance would have it,
InformationWeek wrote about one of the best examples of the phenomenon
(without drawing my kind of conclusions of course), with a series of
articles on WalMart's use of RFID for linking all its stores, suppliers
and customers:
