You name two radically different things: "promote leeft-liberal
_campaigns_" (emphasis added) and "a protest _vote_" (emphasis added).
But it is the campaign, not the voting itself that counts. Protest votes
(when they are so small and scattered) are mere fluff, but the activity
of campaigning for an alternative perspective builds strongly (or can
build strongly) for the future. Think of campaigning for Nader/Camejo in
conjunction with building for the MWM, and the political relations that
both activities will, or can potentially, build.
