Octob1917 writes: "Go into any oppressed community, South Central or Harlem
say, and start trying to condescend them and see how far you get. People
there possess a consciousness which is much more advanced than that you will
find on any university campus or town hall meeting, which Camejo frequents."
Oh, this sounds so ... r-r-r-revolutionary. But I don't need lectures from
you about the consciousness of working people. I do most of my political
work in an undocumented immigrant movement in Atlanta. The approach to the
work that you propose is raving ultraleft lunacy.
"I haven't seen Camejo much around the mass movements against the war, I
haven't seen him marching in the streets, and I haven't seen him around the
Million Worker March movement."
You freely admit you've never even met Camejo. Have you ever seen him in the
flesh? Yet you claim to base your statements on "my own observations." You,
I take it, must be that Yahweh they speak of, omniscient and omnipresent, so
as to be able to testify authoritatively as to Camejo's doings. Pardon me
for remaining quite skeptical.
Peter has a track record going back to the late 1950's. There are quite a
few people on this list familiar with that record. His activities the last
couple of years, in his gubernatorial campaigns and in this campaign, have
been commented from time to time on this list. I have on my hard drive, for
example, pictures taken by I think Walter Lippmann who is on this list of
Camejo addressing an antiwar rally in 2002 in San Francisco. That
demonstration sparked an intense interest on my part because of a letter his
campaign circulated prior to the march that the most important thing
supporters of his campaign could do was to take part in that protest.
Camejo has been there in protests against the war. He was an outstanding
leader of the anti-Vietnam War protests decades ago and has remained a
leading figure in antiwar and solidarity movements, most recently speaking
at the social forum held in Boston in counterposition to the Democrat
convention and in New York as part of the protests against the Republican
event.
He has also been involved in protests for immigrants' rights. In the late
1970's, he was the central organizer of a movement among Chicanos and other
Latinos against deportations and the Carter administration's proposal to
erect a fence along the border. He has remained involved in struggles for
Latino and immigrant rights, including the fight around drivers licenses,
which is the most deeply-felt issue in the Latino immigrant community.
Your claims aren't just false, they are slanders which discredit you.
Your charges against Camejo need something a little bit more substantial
than your own ignorance, blindness and arrogance to back them up.
Joaquín
