Madeleine K. Albright to Join Columbia as Visiting Fellow

Former U.S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to the United Nations
Madeleine K. Albright will be the inaugural Visiting Saltzman Fellow at
Columbia University's Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies this
fall, the University has announced.

Albright, the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S.
government, will continue to pursue her research interests in
democratization as well as the role of women in international affairs.
She will also deliver The School of International and Public Affairs'
annual Silver Lecture. The newly created visiting fellow position was
made possible through the philanthropy of Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman.
It is designed to further the institute's work on world peace and
security, and to give students a valuable opportunity to interact with
an eminent policymaker in a collegial, informal setting.

"One of the greatest statespersons of our times, Madeleine Albright has
played a decisive role in forging new approaches to U.S. foreign policy,
building strong alliances and institutions to enhance global security
for decades to come," said Lee C. Bollinger, president of Columbia
University . "She brings to Columbia and our students an insider's view
of the challenges of modern-day diplomacy and effective world leadership."

Madeleine Albright served as the 64th Secretary of State of the United
States . During her tenure, she successfully promoted the expansion and
modernization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO),
encouraged NATO's campaign to reverse ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, and
promoted peace and stability in some of the world's most volatile areas.

"We are pleased to welcome Madeleine Albright -- a SIPA alumna -- back
to our campus," said SIPA Dean Lisa Anderson. "Her numerous diplomatic
achievements over a long career in government, the private sector and
higher education have had a profound impact on the United States and the
world. A topflight global thinker, she will bring a wealth of experience
to our discussions."

As a member of President Clinton's Cabinet and the National Security
Council for eight years, Albright was the U.S. Permanent Representative
to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997. She is the first Michael and
Virginia Mortara Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Practice of
Diplomacy at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and founder of The
Albright Group, LLC, a global strategy firm. Albright also serves on the
Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange, as chair of the
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and as president
of the Truman Scholarship Foundation. She received her B.A. with honors
from Wellesley College, and her master's and doctorate from Columbia
University.
