[Marxism] Forwarded from Victor R.

Ummm.. i never thought marxism in itself is incapable of theorizing both
(1) the nation(alism) and (2) cultures / semi-nations that failed to
achieve a formal, modern State (Roma, Jews until recently, and Puerto
Rico) .

You look back carefully at the econ./pol./social history of these
groups, it makes sense... marxism is up to the task. Maybe Marx and
other marxists undertheorized these issues, but i don't think the
problem is with marxism itself. Maybe people should write a book on this
or something.

Lou pointed out the changes in Jewish culture as Jews assimilate,
intermarry, etc.

A related phenomena I see is how Puerto Ricans in the States are no
longer reclaiming a national "Puerto Rican" identity; PRs are abandoning
support for Puerto Rican independence. Gradually, we are identifying
with "transnational" or "transcultural" indentities such as "Latino",
abandoning "national liberation" politics for more trendy, often
consumerist, labels and identity politics. Hardt-Negri would be so happy.

This has positive (positive: I as a Latino can identify with Colombians
and fight for worker's rights in that country) and negative
consequences. But the general trend seems to be disastarous for the
independentista movement, thus, largely negative. That's another book
idea. I charge 10 cents per idea.
